Ive reached the half century mark in my life and can
honestly say that Ive been creating some form of art for at least 47 of
those years. As a grade school student I would get my relatives to sit for
portraits. I took every available art class throughout school. As a youth I
received a scholarship to attend a class at the Des Moines Art Center where I
discovered I didnt like printmaking. I still dont. I received lots
of encouragement from my high school art teacher, Bob Hagin. (Thanks Bob) I
loved working in metals, painting, drawing, pottery, and later I developed an
interest in macrame (it must have been the 70s), photography (very amateur),
computer graphics and needlework. And now, gourd crafting. I started
college in 1976 as an accounting major who took lots of art classes and
finished much later with a major in fine art. I received my BA from Simpson
College in Indianola, Iowa in 1991. (I was a late bloomer.) In the years
between and since, Ive worked in graphic design/computer graphics.

I
worked for our local newspaper, two Des Moines-based ad agencies
and as communications coordinator for my church. I also freelanced
and designed t-shirts for the Indianola-based National Balloon Classic
for seven years. And lots of freebiesits amazing how
many projects present themselves when youre a graphic artist.
During that time I always tried to squeeze in a little time for
my other art. I was really ready to get off the computer and back
to the easel.
My love of gourd crafting started when I received a painted gourd
bird house from my aunt, Norma. (Thanks Aunt Normie) I got a bunch
of gourds from Georgia and with no idea what I was doing, I started
making bird houses. Each one was a different cat with the hole as
its mouth. I did roughly 10 or so and quit for various reasons.
Then in January of 2005, nearly six years later, I was talking to
my sister, Rose, who told me she had just quit her boring part-time
job and I said, I should quit my job too and we should start
a crafting business. We got started with the gourds left from
my first experience six years earlier, a couple of inspiring books,
crafting supplies and a collection of tools. I was hooked. Our originally
conceived craft business immediately became a gourd business. Sister
Rose has since decided that her other interests are her true calling
and so is no longer in business with me. (Thanks for getting me
started Rose.) So, I am now going it alone and loving it. I love
gourd crafting because it is so versatile. Each unique gourd inspires
me, communicates to me what it will become.
I try to remember to thank God each and every day for His many gifts
-- my husband and best friend who so generously provides for me
and encourages me to pursue my true calling and the friends who
support me (thanks for being my first customers). With God, all
things are possible. CLICK
